The third level education system in Ireland is broad in scope and encompasses the university sector, institute of technology, the Colleges of Education and private independent College.
Entry to third level education for overseas students is determined individually by each institution and is generally based on national examination performance and English language aptitude.
The quality of Irish education awards is fully recognized globally. All Irish awards are included in the national framework of qualifications maintained by the NQAI (National Qualifications Authority of Ireland).
HOW TO APPLY
It is advisable to begin the application process at least one year in advance of the proposed arrival date in Ireland. Students should apply directly to the institution of their choice.
Programs at third Level
- One year Certificate – 1 yr. full time
- National Certificate - 2 yrs. full time
- National Diploma - 1 yr after National certificate/ 3yrs. ab initio
- Bachelor Degree - 4 yrs. course
- Graduate Diploma - Especially for graduates 1 yr usually.
- Masters Degree - Either by research/taught program (normally 1-2 yrs. education)
- Doctorate - Usually takes 3 yrs. of original research

Most of the independent colleges are to the awards of overseas universities or other awards bodies.

There are several colleges of Education for primary school teaches in Ireland. These colleges offer three leading to a Bachelors of Education degree which is recognized qualification for primary school teacher.
